You are correct. When you have your phone connected to the pc (pc-studio mode only) you will have in device manager and under the modems a samsung mobile modem.  Double click on the modem. Click on the advanced tab.  Toward the bottom click on advanced port settings. You should see your COM# listed.

And yes if for some reason you need to enter a com port manually in TKFE, you enter the word com and the number. So if the port was 15 you would enter COM15.

my prob was that i just changed the port and typed COM4
it only said Phone (P:) (thats it )
then i typed COM7 and it showed evertyng

Hello,  I believe I have followed the instructions to a "T".  When I start TKFE 2.2 and I goto the Settings to set the COM settings, it is blank.  So I went to Device Manager in Windows Vista, the Samsung modem is COM9.  So I took COM9 and manually typed it into the settings of TKFE.  However, when I goto connect, I get an error that states, "Error:  The communication link is lost."

Any ideas?

Thanks
Ed

I had the same problem as well. My drop down never populated so I found the port number manually by going to the vista device manager and looking under modems, then right click properties, I think someone mentioned this above. But it still wouldn't work for me, I kept getting the communication broken error even though PC studio was working fine.

Then I turned the phone off and waited a few mins, realized that even when the phone was off, the device manager could still see the phone, so tried tkfileexplorer with the phone being off, and it connected fine, now I can see everything.

Thanks again and I hope my mini solution helps someone.

Try rebooting the phone. Then reconnect and try tkfe again. I had to do this 2 times and suddenly it worked.

To find out the com port without trial and error on XP:
This will sound more complicated then it is.

First, make sure you have the Mobile connected to the computer, and that the appropriate USB modem drivers are installed, as per page one of this thread.

Right click "My Computer" Select Properties.
Click on the "Hardware" Tab.
Click on "Device Manager".
Locate "Modems" and expand it.
Right click on "Samsung Mobile Modem V2" and select properties.
Select the tab "Advanced".
Click on "Advanced Port Settings".
On the bottom of that window, you will see a drop down list, indicating the port that the modem is currently using.

You can change the port designation from this place also, but that is not why I had you click through all that. Tongue

Offtopic : (sort of) : I noticed that the forum only had a "Games" thread, but no Apps.
I found 3 apps on the Eternity forum, but that is about it.
Anybody got any good ones so that we might be able to get apps, its own thread?

There is an apps section. It is right above the games section. Its called 3rd party apps.  I started an apps thread on the impression forum. You have to register to see the download links. I have more to add. Just been busy. Check it out.

I didn't know where to post this, but I guess this could be the appropriate thread, (a mod can move this to the appropriate thread if it is wrong).
I have long been looking for a PDF reader for cellphones, and also with the Solstice.
I remember reading a post, just can't remember where, but the Solstice has its own PDF reader in it.
No extra software needed to read in other words.
I tried using TKFE and doing a transfer, but the file kept staying invisible on the phone.
Then just because I had a hunch, I loaded up the Samsung software, and connected to my phone.
Once I transferred the file through the Samsung software, and disconnected my phone from the USB cable,

I was able to see my PDF file (I tested it with a 5 page origami PDF lol), and imagine my surprise when I was able to just tap it and read it.
Turning a page was done by dragging from the bottom of the screen to the top, which is kind of annoying but manageable.

Guess this is sort of a little hint on how to get PDF's to work on your phone, without 3rd party software. Smiley

Do not use TKFE to put pictures, songs, or documents on your phone. They will not be seen by your phone. That is what mass storage or pc-studio is for.

If you decide not to listen and use TKFE anyways you will need to go to the internals and then to storage and then update the media database and they will then show.

with all the warnings of accessing the phone via the unlock code "Accessing Admin Settings w/ Master Key" (giving in the TKFE section of the forums) what do we have to be specifically concerned about? Changing the firmware or other phone settings? can the programs (games/apps etc.)/files (jpgs) cause the phone to brick? like a virus or something. Can ATT see that i accessed the Accessing Admin Settings w/ Master Key and freeze the phone?

any advice anyone?

Good stuff got it to work finally.

To help some of you that are having problems.

Q: if the Port comes blank...
Go to device manager and under Modems find the Samsung Modem and find the Com port and enter it manually.

Q: After entering the port, still not connecting to phone...
While connected reboot your phone.
Or try running TEK and then connecting the phone.

I tried added a PDF file to my phone as an ebook. Everyhthing worked good. except scrolling and spanning the pages when zoomed to readable level is very slow and not very responsive as rest of the phone...
